Yard soggy over the septic field, or drains slowing down after a storm? The drain field may not be taking water the way it should. We find out why and tell you how to fix it.

Signs of a drain field problem

  • Soggy ground or grass greener than the rest of the yard
  • Sewage smell outside
  • Slow drains in the house
  • Problems that get worse after heavy rain

Why fields struggle

A drain field needs dry enough soil to soak up water from the tank. Heavy rain fills the soil and leaves no room. Low spots in a yard hold water longer. Dense soil drains slower than loose, sandy soil. A tank that hasn't been pumped can also push solids out into the lines and clog them.

How we fix it

We diagnose first. The fix depends on what we find.

  • Roof or yard water running onto the field can be redirected.
  • A pump-out can take pressure off a struggling field.
  • If the field is worn out, it needs repair or replacement.

Not sure it is the field?

The same signs can come from a full tank or a broken baffle. A septic inspection sorts that out. If the trouble is in the tank or the lines to it, see septic repair.
